It's thankfully and decidedly not anime*. They're not doing Joss Whedon-esque ironic performances - they're taking the material seriously and without apology - but they lean into it with a "turn it up to 11" gusto that makes it work. Almost every actor has the good instincts to know that what they're starring in is actually high-camp bullshit. There's a lot of Marvel Comics "two would-be allies fight each other because one of them isn't willing to hear the other out, but then they make up immediately after kicking each other's ass a bit" going on.īut goddamn do the actors sell that drek. I think NRS may have cracked the ideal story mode for a fighting game (I can think of the original Dreamcast Soul Calibur's Edge Master mode being its possible rival) I'm gonna get this out of the way: the writing isn't good. Watched a quick YouTube recap to bring me up to speed on the events of 4 to apocalypse, watched summary "movies" of 9 and 10 that crunched the story of each down to about 10 mins or so, then dived into the story. Also loved the original film adaptation like pretty much everyone.ĭidn't really know much about the lore since then other than MK9 being a time-travel soft reboot kind of deal. I was big into the original Mortal Kombat trilogy, with MK3 (original, not ultimate) being a game I played religiously for a summer growing up using the DOS port. The MK1 announcement and details got me super interested - nothing like a good reboot to pull you in! - and as MK11 is super cheap right now on Steam for the Summer Sale I figured, why not?
